Rusholme wind farm gets green light

October 2006

Selby District Council granted planning on Wednesday 10th October for permission for Rusholme
windfarm, in a decision which will provide clean energy to almost 15,000 homes.
The Council received over 1,200 letters of support for the windfarm, which will be built in the
shadow of the notorious Drax power station, the largest single contributor to global warming gases in the UK.
Applauding the decision, Richard Claxton, local Greenpeace campaigner said:
"This is an iconic decision. Here, in the shadow of Drax power station, Selby District Council
is turning its back on dirty energy and taking a bold step into the clean energy future we so
desperately need.
"Wind power is a vital part of the solution to the climate chaos which is killing 150,000 people a year.
Not only is it clean, cheap, safe and reliable – it’s popular, too."
The twelve turbines at Rusholme will have a combined production capacity of 24MW, which will power around 14,500 homes and prevent about 68,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide being released into the
atmosphere every year.
