SEA - opposing 'windy nimby's' in North Wales!

Stunning North West Wales is home to the Sustainable Energy Alliance (SEA), a pro-active, energised group formed in May 2005 by a group of environmentalists. It was built upon an idea of one of its creators and co-ordinator, Jon Lincoln, “to support proposed wind farms (and renewable energy in general) and oppose the noisy windy nimby’s!” .

SEA believe that developing clean, renewable energy is an important and vital step we must take to combat climate change. Meeting once or twice each month, they have been collecting petitions across North Wales, lobbying Conwy Concil, DTI and the Welsh Assembly Government as well. They have received plenty of media coverage of late, and Jon Lincoln has given interviews to local TV, BBC Radio Wales (“One was live with a not so nice nimby" says Jon!), BBC online and a number of newspapers.

At the moment SEA are campaigning in support of the proposed Gwynt y Môr wind farm in Liverpool Bay, nine miles off the Welsh coast at Rhyll (see map below). With an estimated 750 MW capacity, Gwynt y Môr (meaning Sea Wind) would produce enough power each year to meet the demands of 40% of domestic electricity consumption in Wales (500,000 houses each year). SEA believe that the majority of the local people and visitors to that area are in favour of the proposal, but Conwy Council have decided to oppose the project on the grounds that they fear it will harm the tourist industry.

Local opposition group SOS (Save Our Scenery) are opposing the farm and often exaggerate the truth to drum up more local opposition. “The Department of Trade and Industry will, however, have the final say on whether this project goes ahead sometime this year. At the moment it looks like there will be a Public Enquiry” says Jon.

"Conwy Council recently held a summit meeting to discuss the proposed wind farm and we made sure our voices of support were heard, we also had a five foot cardboard Penguin and a supporter dressesd in a Polar Bear suit to highlight the threat to the Polar regions caused by the impact of man made climate change there. The press loved these!”

Support SEA!

Being the positive bunch that they are, SEA have lots of good media events planned in the very near future, so if you would like to get involved or lend your support in other ways check out their website www.se-alliance.org.uk. They will be doing a pro-wind banner hanging at the summit of Mount Snowdon (the highest peak in England and Wales). They plan to gather 200 people on the beach on Llandudno and spell out the word ‘YES’ (200 being the number of turbines there would be at Gwynt y Môr) and they hope to get a couple of sailboats together in the Summer to sail to the proposed site and do a banner hanging over the side of the boat…"as a statement of intent". "We recently discovered that a group with the same name already exists in New York and they are campaigning for an offshore wind farm off Long Island - There has been some great networking and idea sharing between the two groups !"

SEA have some cool t-shirts (over 100 sold so far!) and other windy goods too. (This is how they fund themselves - from merchandise sales). Click here to view.

"We also have a page for supportive comments for this wind farm and wind power in general, to add yours please send to jon@leafandstream.fsnet.co.uk - Thanks!"
