Doncaster
shoppers say Yes2wind!

February 2005

More than
thirty YES2WIND volunteers – many dressed as animals threatened
by global warming – took to the streets of Doncaster in
support of the proposed wind farm at Tween Bridge, near Thorne.
The campaigners
talked to members of the public and handed out Yes2Wind leaflets,
stickers and lollipops. In just over an hour and a half, they
collected nearly 350 letters of support for the clean energy scheme.
These will now be passed on to Doncaster Council, and takes the
total number collected to over 1,000. The Tween Bridge farm will
comprise 28 turbines and will generate power for a third of the
homes in Doncaster Metropolotan Borough. It's projected to save
more than 4.2m tonnes of CO2 over 25 years.
Organiser
Richard Claxton said: "We’re delighted. It was an extremely
positive and colourful rally and the response from members of
the public was fantastic – they were very supportive, very
friendly and very well-informed. There were a few who had concerns
about large wind turbines but the vast majority fully understood
the reasons why we urgently need more wind power. They know that
climate change is the greatest threat we face in the world, and
that we have to turn our backs on dirty energy and get behind
wind farms.
"The endangered animals – polar bear, penguin, tigers,
baboon, bluebird and owl – went down really will with the
children and the volunteers in costume enjoyed the attention they
got: lots of hugs, stroking and pats on the back! Who says campaigning
can’t be great fun?"
