Wind Energy Breaks Quarterly Records

Posted 9th September 2011

Provisional statistics released by DECC show that for Q2 2011, wind energy supplied 2.9TWh of electricity. This is partly due to increased capacity, but also due to increased wind speeds when compared to the same period in 2010.

This amount of electricity is equivalent to the needs of nearly 2.5 million 'average' homes and is the highest quarterly figure for wind output to date. Offshore wind accounted for 1.12TWh.

During the same period gas-fired supplies fell by about 21% (8.8TWh), which DECC have related to higher prices.

The statistics are provided in Energy Trends table 5.4
