Scottish Government backs Stroupster Wind Farm

Posted 22nd April 2010

A Caithness wind farm capable of powering 17,000 homes has received the green light from the Scottish Government – five years after it was first submitted to Highland Council.

RWE npower renewables was granted consent (8 April 2010) for a 12 turbine wind farm in Wick, Caithness following a public inquiry in November 2009. Frank Park, RWE npower renewables Scotland Development Manager, said: “This is great news and justifies our continued commitment in pursuing this scheme. We can now commit our efforts to fully aiding the Scottish Government’s target of producing 50% of electricity from renewable sources by 2020.”

Proposals for the 30MW wind farm were submitted to Highland Council in 2005 but were rejected a year later. Following the public inquiry, the Scottish Government this week overturned the Council’s initial decision of the scheme, giving the go ahead for Stroupster Wind Farm.

Frank Park added “We have always been confident that the project is wellsited, complies with planning policy and will have an acceptable visual effect on the landscape.”

RWE npower renewables will now start planning the next phase of the project leading up to construction.
