RWE npower renewables is investigating the potential for a wind farm on a site just off the A14 near Thrapston to the west of Kettering, between the villages of Bythorn, Keyston and Molesworth. The project is at a relatively early stage, with work so far concentrating on ensuring that the site is viable but, if successful, the site could make an important contribution towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and tackling climate change. Huntingdon District Council previously granted us planning permission to erect an anemometer mast (also known as a met mast), which is a wind measuring device, to collect information about wind speeds, direction and turbulence. The met mast collected data for 2 years and the results collected show that the site has sufficient wind resource to make a wind farm a viable option on this site. As a responsible developer, RWE npower renewables undertake many feasibility assessments to ensure the site is suitable. These include investigations to assess local ecology, landscape, hydrology and potential noise studies. We will also consult a wide range of people and organisations about the potential site such as The Environment Agency, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the Ministry of Defence. We will ensure the local public are kept well informed. We aim to hold an event to meet local residents face to face. This enables us to provide information and allows us to hear, and take account of, resident’s comments. If all the information we have collected continues to show the site has the potential for a wind farm, we then hope to submit a planning application to Huntingdonshire District Council. If the council agrees the site is suitable, the wind farm could supply a large number of homes with clean, sustainable electricity.
