The proposed wind farm occupies an area of land known locally as Frodsham Marsh and Helsby Marsh. Much of the land has been used for many years to deposit dredgings from the neighbouring Manchester Ship Canal. The site extends to some 557 hectares, although only a small fraction of this land would be taken up by the development. The proposed turbines would be located on the inactive deposit grounds, avoiding the central active lagoon, thereby splitting the turbines into two distinct clusters. The proposed Frodsham wind farm could generate enough electricity to meet the needs of 28,500 households - equivalent to more than one-fifth of the homes in Cheshire West and Chester. Extensive studies have been undertaken on a stretch of land that runs between the Manchester Ship Canal and the M56, and indicate that that it is a good location for a wind farm of 20 turbines. Each of the 125m turbines would generate 3MW of electricity, and, together provide a total of 60MW installed capacity. Frodsham wind farm would allow Cheshire to help the UK meet its 2020 renewable energy obligations. On 25 February 2010, Peel Energy submitted an application for the Frodsham wind farm to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), the government body responsible for handling and determining the application.
