Offshore wind farms Where will offshore wind farms be built?
The government has proposed two rounds of offshore developments. North Hoyle and Scroby Sands are two of the first stage one sites to be completed, and both are now supplying more than 40,000 homes.
Round One was announced in 2000-1 and 12 of the 18 projects have gained all the necessary statutory consents to enable construction and operation. Round Two was announced in December 2003 with 15 projects being proposed within and beyond territorial waters.
Areas identified as having a high potential for offshore development are on both east and west coasts of the country. Starting south of the Humber, continuing through Lincolnshire and Norfolk, then running down and around East Anglia to the Thames estuary, while on the other coast the best resources are mainly to the north-west, from Blackpool down to North Wales.

As regards the second round of offshore wind farms: Three areas have been identified as having a high potential. These three areas are The Thames, The Greater Wash and The Northwest.
The areas are shown in detail in Figure 1 of the Environmental Report of the Government's Strategic Environmental Assessment for Offshore Wind. |
