Scroby
sands wind farm is switched on!

The
first turbines at one of Britain's biggest offshore wind farms have
begun to produce power. Two of the 30 turbines at Scroby Sands off
the coast of Norfolk near Great Yarmouth began rotating on Monday.
The switch-on of the 60ft turbines was the culmination of 10
years of planning and coincided with the opening of the wind farm's
new information centre. The remaining turbines should go into
operation during August, supplying enough power for about 41,000
homes.
Jason Scagell, head of E.ON UK Renewables, the firm which runs
Powergen, said it was a fantastic day for the people involved
with the £75m project.
"We've been involved with the project for almost a decade
and to finally have the first turbine turning is just a great
sight," he said.
"I hope that local people and tourists will have the chance
to have a look at the wind farm as we gradually bring all 30 turbines
on line over the next few weeks."
The turbines will save the emission of 75,000 tons of carbon
dioxide each year and Powergen can add another eight turbines
if the first wave prove successful.
